A Dedicated Viola Studio for the Middle Voice

.The viola is not an add-on instrument. It deserves its own home — and its own teacher.

After all, viola players are not doublers, not violinists who switched, not an afterthought in the string section. We are a distinct breed with a distinct instrument, a distinct repertoire, and a distinct set of technical and musical challenges. Finding a teacher who specializes — who understands those challenges from the inside — makes all the difference.

This studio is that place. Dedicated entirely to the viola, built around the art of the middle voice, and designed for students who are serious about their craft.

Who this studio is for:

Adult amateur violists — at any level, returning after a break or playing consistently, who want to grow with intention and enjoy the process

Serious high school violists — with a passion for performing and a desire to develop real technical and musical depth

Young professionals — navigating life after conservatory and looking for a teacher who understands what that transition actually involves

Teaching Philosophy:

My teaching starts with awareness.

Awareness of physical setup. Awareness of listening. Awareness of the musical ideas behind every technical decision. Before I teach you how to do something, I teach you how to ask why — because a student who understands the reason behind a technique can solve problems independently, adapt under pressure, and grow without me in the room.

From there I teach the tools: the bow arm, the left hand, intonation, tone production, shifting, vibrato, phrasing, all of it. But always in service of something larger — helping you develop a genuine relationship with the instrument and with your own musicianship.

What matters most to me is trust. Trust that you can take yourself seriously. Trust that the work you put in will be guided well. Trust that this is a space where questions are welcome, mistakes are part of the process, and you will never be made to feel like you don't belong here.

If that sounds like the kind of teaching relationship you've been looking for — I'd love to meet you.

Testimonials:

"Kim is really a viola doctor — she has an uncanny ability to get to the root of the problem: in my case, a misplaced, worn out thumb that had been left 'undiagnosed' for over 40 years."

— R.T., Queens, NY

"Kim is an inspiring violist and teacher. My technique has vastly improved since we started. She's always patient and clarifies all of my many confusions."

— H.H., New York City
